Winter Quarter Access and Affordability Initiatives

person with short hair next to text reading "Sarah Barbara Watstein, Dean, Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons" To reopen our facility to the University community, the library and learning commons is phasing in the reopening or resumption of spaces, core functions, operations and limited in-person services consistent with guidance from the CDC, state, and county, including guidance specific to higher education. To ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all members of the campus community, we are working with campus partners on a variety of “positive education” efforts. The delivery of enhanced virtual services with an emphasis on flexibility and ease of access for our users is prioritized. Growing equity is also prioritized; we are working with campus partners to further develop, unify and effectively market a growing suite of access and affordability initiatives.

There are a few access and affordability initiatives I want to highlight as we move into February:

ACCESS TO COLLECTIONS AND TECHNOLOGY LENDING

Contactless Pickup Services

  • Contactless pickup services of physical items are available for all SU faculty, staff, and students. Material processing and pickup will be available Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For additional information about these services please contact Lemieux Library Access Services (libcirc@seattleu.edu).

Postal Delivery and Return Services

  • Postal delivery and returns are available for select materials for students outside the Seattle area. For information about the delivery and return of library materials, please contact Lemieux Library Access Services (libcirc@seattleu.edu).

Digitization Services

  • Seattle University faculty, students, and staff may request digital scans of small portions of the Lemieux Library physical collection including book chapters and journal articles. Request to scan and deliver will be done via our interlibrary loan platform Illiad. For additional information about digitization services please contact Lemieux Library Resource Sharing (ill@seattleu.edu). Libguide: Article & Book Scanning.

Technology Lending

  • To support students during online learning the library is lending Chromebooks, laptops, and internet hotspots. For more information on library technology lending, or to request a device, please see our guide.
  • For faculty teaching courses on campus Winter Quarter, lapel microphones and presentation clickers are available to checkout. Instructions will be provided at checkout. To schedule a pickup, please contact the library at librarysupport@seattleu.edu.

 

ACCESS TO SERVICES

Learning Assistance Programs

  • Learning Assistance Programs provides peer tutoring, facilitated study groups, and learning strategy development through scheduled workshops and individual meetings with a learning specialist. All services are available virtually. For more information students can visit the LAP website, and can contact our Office Assistants through chat, email, phone, or the Zoom Virtual Desk Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, for assistance.

Math Lab

  • MathLab provides a “Virtual Study Hall” for Seattle U students in lower division Math courses from Math 1000 to Math 2330, including UCOR 1200. Join us over Zoom to work in the presence of fellow students on your math problems. Each meeting is hosted by an SU student that can answer short questions via chat or longer questions via the breakout room feature in Zoom. The Math Lab is open Winter Quarter Mondays – Thursdays from 3:30-8:30pm. 

Writing Center

  • Writing Center is available to assist students at all stages of the writing process. Consultants will help students begin writing tasks, organize and develop first drafts, and revise and edit later drafts. Appointments with a consultant are available virtually either synchronously or asynchronously depending on the student’s preference. For more information students can visit the Writing Center website, and can contact our Office Assistants through chat, email, or phone Monday-Wednesday, 9am-8pm, Thursday 9am-12pm and 2pm-8pm, and Friday 9am-3pm for assistance.

Research Services

  • Research Services is a collaborative team of Research Services librarians and Student Peer Research Consultants (SPRCs), dedicated to supporting our patrons through any stage of the research process. To meet the needs of our patrons, Research Services librarians, assisted by the Student Peer Research Consultants provide the following remote services:  24/7 virtual chat services, email support, instruction support (for faculty) and Zoom-based research consultations for students/faculty/staff.

Chat

  • Lemieux Library’s Research Services department is staffing our virtual chat service to provide students with quick answers to their questions!  Student Peer Research Consultants and Librarians are available by chat Monday through Thursday 10-6, and on Friday and Sunday from 10-4. After business hours and on weekends the chat service is monitored by librarians and staff from member libraries in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, providing 24/7 remote research support.

 

ACCESS TO SPACES

Zoom-Ready Rooms

  • Private study rooms on the 4th and 5th floors are available for zooming a class, joining a virtual meeting, or attending an online program. Rooms are available Sunday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

24/7 Study Spaces

  • 24/7 study spaces are also available including the Garden Reading Room (1st floor), Byte Café and Bangasser Reading Room (2nd floor), and the Computer Lab (2nd floor)
