Tips:

 

In brief:  If you are using the exact wording from another source, even if it only a few words, be sure to put the wording in quotes (Quoting). If you are using your own words (Paraphrasing) , but the ideas or information is from a source, give credit to the source.

Cite not only to give credit to your source, but also to credit your research. Citing also gives your reader a way to go back to the original source material.

There are three major styles for citing: MLAl, APA and CHICAGO.  Check with your instructor to see which style is preferred. If you can choose the style for  citing, the key is to be consistent.
